This study is among the first to estimate effects of RBF on maternal mortality. It uses an ITS strategy on Malawi administrative data to estimate the effect of the Results-Based Financing for Maternal and Newborn Health Initiative and finds that the program had a marginally significant reduction of 4.8 maternal deaths per 100,000 facility deliveries. The study also cautions that a longer time series and / or a larger sample may be needed to appropriately power a study of RBF on mortality outcomes.
