This study is among the first to estimate effects of RBF on maternal mortality. It uses an ITS strategy on Malawi administrative data to estimate the effect of the Results-Based Financing for Maternal and Newborn Health Initiative and finds that the program had a marginally significant reduction of 4.8 maternal deaths per 100,000 facility deliveries. The study also cautions that a longer time series and / or a larger sample may be needed to appropriately power a study of RBF on mortality outcomes.
This report evaluates the five year impacts of the Zomba Cash Transfer Program (ZCTP) in Zomba, Malawi. The ZCTP took place for two years during 2008-2009, and involved giving cash transfers, both conditional on schooling and unconditionally, to initially never-married 13-22 year old young women.
